Welcome to ASCEND-AI (Advancing Student and Collaborative Educator Networks for Digital AI), a College of Arts and Sciences focused initiative at Howard University in partnership with Bowie State. Dedicated to shifting from just consuming technology to becoming true stewards of it. Built on a powerful framework that puts human judgment back in the driver’s seat, ASCEND-AI moves our community from dependency to agency.
In this video, join leadership and faculty—including Dr. Latanya Brown-Robertson, Project Director Erica P. Middleton, and Dean Dr. Rubin Patterson—as they break down the five pillars of the ASCEND-AI Learning Matrix that are redefining how we learn and lead:
Module 1: Grounding – Ensuring human thought and our unique context always come first.
Module 2: Judgment – Focusing on the ethical choices behind every click.
Module 3: Verification – Building the habit of slowing down to verify and correct machine output.
Module 4: Integration – Supporting the arts and sciences without losing the pedagogy of each discipline.
Module 5: Leadership – Preparing students to be critics, designers, and governors of these systems.

ASCEND-AI is a four-year, $4 million FIPSE-funded initiative designed to build sustainable AI literacy capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities through faculty development, student programming, and inter-institutional collaboration.
