Developed by Bonsai Entertainment and published by NewKidCo in North America and Ubi Soft in Europe, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland is a 1999 Game Boy Color platformer based on the Sesame Street movie of the same name. Elmo’s beloved blue blanket has disappeared into Grouchland, sending him on a very short journey through its garbage-filled environments to retrieve it.

The game was clearly designed for preschoolers and children taking their first steps into video games. Most of the adventure consists of eight extremely short side-scrolling stages where Elmo walks from left to right, jumping over simple obstacles such as fire hydrants, water sprays and other hazards. There are no complicated attacks, puzzles or collectibles to worry about, so virtually everything can be understood within seconds.

Two special stages provide some variety. One has Elmo falling through Oscar the Grouch’s trash can into Grouchland while you move him left and right to dodge pieces of falling garbage. Another places him in a moving mine cart, where the main challenge is ducking beneath low ceilings as the cart travels forward. Neither sequence is particularly demanding, but they help break up the otherwise repetitive platforming.

The controls are simple and functional, although Elmo’s movement can feel slightly loose compared with better platformers on the system. Precise jumping is rarely required, however, because the stages have been built around accessibility rather than challenge. Even the harder difficulty setting offers little resistance to experienced players.

That extremely low difficulty is both the game’s purpose and its biggest weakness. Younger children can make progress without constantly failing, which makes sense for the intended audience. For practically anyone else, there is almost nothing to master. Stages are tiny, obstacles are predictable, and the mechanics barely evolve from beginning to end.

The graphics are more successful. Elmo has a large, colorful and immediately recognizable sprite, and Grouchland’s rubbish-covered backgrounds give the game some personality despite the Game Boy Color’s limited resolution. Bright foreground objects are generally easy to distinguish, which is especially useful for younger players.

The music and sound effects are similarly uncomplicated but pleasant enough during such a brief adventure. Nothing about the presentation pushes the hardware particularly far, but it captures the cheerful Sesame Street atmosphere better than the simplistic gameplay might suggest.

The most remarkable aspect of Elmo in Grouchland is simply how short it is. A normal inexperienced player may spend considerably longer exploring and making mistakes, but someone familiar with platform games can finish it extremely quickly. The speedrunning community has reduced the entire game to barely more than three minutes, which illustrates just how little actual content is present once you know the route.

There is consequently very little replay value. The levels offer few secrets or alternative routes, and once you have completed the game there is hardly any reason to return unless you want to try the harder difficulty or improve your completion time.

As a conventional Game Boy Color platformer, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland is far too short, repetitive and effortless to recommend. Compared with the system’s better platform games, it feels closer to an interactive introduction to gaming than a full adventure.

For its actual target audience, though, that simplicity is understandable. A preschooler who loves Elmo gets recognizable characters, colorful graphics, forgiving controls and almost no frustration. In that narrow role it works reasonably well.

For everyone else, it is little more than an amusingly brief licensed curiosity.
