Time to spiffy up the joint, kids, and get some haircuts, Granny Bird's coming for a visit! First aired on December 19, 1969, it's Episode 30 of the best darn kids show ever, Sesame Street! A Friday episode on an actual Friday just to show off for @Deborah Lyons ;-) If we do a really good job cleaning up, maybe Jeremy Maine aka @Sesame Maniac will stop by so we can thank him properly.
NOTE: The HBO Max airing removed the "Ten Little Indians" segment from "Numerosity" (Song of Ten).
The main storyline is the build-up to Granny Bird's visit in the final scene, the first time we've seen any members of Big Bird's family, even if it is just in a photo album (his father, mother, and little brother are only seen in pictures). Caroll Spinney (as Big Bird and Granny Bird) talking to himself behind closed doors over the credits is priceless! Keep in mind, as the @Tough Pigs commentary mentions (linked below), they only had one Big Bird costume at the time, so, yeah, they're ALL just Big Bird in different costumes. Love it.
NEW CAST STUFF: Susan (Loretta Long) reads a fun book about manners, "What Do You Say, Dear?" by Sesyle Joslin, illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak ("Where The Wild Things Are"); "One of These Things" w/Bob (Os, hands, pencils, cake); Buddy (Brandon Maggart) and Jim (James Catusi) try to play checkers.
NEW ANIMAL ANTICS: In separate visits to the arbour, Bob (Bob McGrath) shows the kids a honey bear (aka kinkajou) and a lion cub. Poor little "king of the jungle" has to sit there with a dollop of ice cream on his nose. How undignified.
NEW MUPPETS: A mailman (Brandon Maggart, better known for his role as Buddy), delivers mail to Big Bird's nest, but bypasses Oscar's (Caroll Spinney) can. As he laments that no one cares, Gordon (Matt Robinson) shares his junk mail with him; Big Bird confuses Gs for cheese at Mr. Hooper's (Will Lee) store; Tony sings "Lulu's Back in Town" to Beautiful Day Monster in a wig; Ernie (Jim Henson) and Bert (Frank Oz) play a What Happens Next? game using drawings of an empty bird cage, a man lying next to a banana peel, and an empty page (see, there used to be this cow ..).
REPEAT MUPPETS: Bert tells Ernie to clean up their messy apartment (2 parts).
NEW CARTOON: Jump Rope Alphabet ("I've got an A in my ankle, I've got a B in my back..").
