A Merseyside duo of The Coral’s Ian Skelly and The Zutons’ Paul Molloy, The Serpent Power take a nostalgic trip back to 1960s psychedelia.
They share their name with a book of Victorian orientalism about tantric philosophy, the sort of battered tome a seeker after truth might have once come upon in a second-hand bookshop, and make music that jangles along in classic psych-pop style.
The tone is ironic yet affectionate, a genial mood of make-believe summed up by the title track, in which “the serpent power” is revealed to be “a full moon, black mass, dance craze” — otherwise known as the frug if the good-natured fuzz-pop backdrop is anything to go by.

![The Creation Our Music Is Red With Purple Flashes [bonus tracks]
The Creation includes: Kenny Pickett, Eddie Phillips, Jack Jones, Bob Garner, Kim Gardner, Herbie Flowers, Ron Wood.Includes liner notes by John Reed.Liner Note Author: John Reed.Titled after a famous quote from guitarist Eddie Phillips and released just before the Creation finally achieved its three-decades-delayed U.S. breakthrough when Wes Anderson used the bands trademark hit Making Time in his 1999 film RUSHMORE, OUR MUSIC IS RED WITH PURPLE FLASHES outdoes all previous Creation compilations. Collecting every studio track this band recorded in its original 60s incarnation, including rarities like the rarely-available but bittersweetly beautiful Sweet Helen along with legendary mod-psychedelia guitar-blast classics like Making Time, Biff Bang Pow, and Painter Man, and including rare photos and extensive liner notes, this is a textbook example of how to do a compilation. No fan of 60s U.K. pop should be without this record.
