QAGOMA | Serious Jokes/ Art Course: Artists Illuminated @QAGOMA_Australia | Uploaded December 2022 | Updated October 2024, 12 hours ago.
Join Dr Andrea Bubenik, Senior Lecturer, School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland on this three–part art historical journey that traces universal themes seen across historic, modern and contemporary art. Casting a spotlight on artworks from the QAGOMA Collection, links between artists will be illuminated, from the likes of Tintoretto and Rubens, through to Picasso and Cindy Sherman.
SESSION 1: Serious Jokes
Laughter and play permeate the history of art. In this session, explore the carnivalesque, through vibrant costumes and masks, and fascination with the grotesque, spectacle, and procession throughout art history. Consider how artists from the Renaissance to today have understood the subversive potential of laughter and challenged definitions of low and high art, invented pasts and imagined other worlds.
