Serena Williams Really Wants To RETIRE.. Here's Why

Welcome back to Athlete District. Here’s some news for you about Selena Williams. Serena Williams, 23-time grand slam singles champion, hinted at retirement from the sport after this year's US Open tennis tournament. "I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people," Williams said in an interview with Vogue magazine on Tuesday. "Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me," Williams added.

Williams, who has a daughter named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr shared an Instagram post, saying "the countdown has begun." "My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals, and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I'm gonna relish these next few weeks," she wrote. Williams also said that she will compete at the US Open which begins at the end of August. Williams, who ranked 407th in the globe, won 23 Grand Slam titles, including six US Open, in women's singles. Williams is now 37 years old. She already claimed the title as the oldest women's player to win a grand slam when she prevailed in the 2017 Australian Open final, when pregnant with her daughter. Only Ken Rosewall reached the final of a grand slam at a more advanced age when he reached the decider at Flushing Meadows aged 40 in 1974. Williams is now in uncharted territory — and not just due to her age. In the 18 years between Williams's first grand slam title — the 1999 US Open — and her most recent — the 2017 Australian Open — Williams lost just six of her 29 grand slam singles final appearances. She has lost her last four without claiming a single set. Perhaps it is too much. Perhaps Williams is destined to be stuck on the precipice of undisputed greatness, unable to crest tennis's Hillary Step to stand on top of the sporting world alongside Margaret Court.
