Laura and Karen have collaborated for several years in various N.J.-based anti-racism groups, including the Community Course on Racism (based in Somerville, New Jersey, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Somerset Hills) and the Hunterdon County Anti-Racism Coalition. In this workshop, Laura and Karen will be in dialogue with each other and the audience to discuss strategies for developing and applying an anti-racist mindset.
Laura Zhang-Choi often finds herself at the intersections of faith and justice. Laura's advocacy centers LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion, mental health, pluralistic education, anti-racism education, accessibility, and community building. She is currently a candidate as an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). A former school board member of Greenwich Township School District, she continues to fight for the inclusion and belonging for all students.
Dr. Karen Gaffney is an English professor at Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey. The second edition of her book, "Dismantling the Racism Machine: A Manual and Toolbox," was published in April 2025 by Routledge. The book is an accessible introduction to race and racism with tools for action. She presents at national conferences, facilitates anti-racism workshops in libraries and churches, serves in local anti-racism coalitions, and manages the website Divided No Longer, which supports her book by providing a variety of anti-racism resources.
