Sense-making is the process by which people give meaning to their collective experiences and the world around them through mental models, heuristics, and stories among other means. The formation of these schemata and narratives helps us make sense of the world around us within a coherent overall narrative, enabling us to develop a shared picture of the world we live in.

Sense-making is an activity as old as the human species itself, but in the 21st century with the massive expansion of connectivity and rise of the Anthropocene we live in uncharted territory, where our old stories that served us well for so long are now appearing incomplete in this new world of complexity. We increasingly feel a sense of being overwhelmed and the world "falling apart" because our stories of how the world works are no longer suffice and that lack of story translates into a lack of direction. In this uncharted territory, we are looking for new ways to make sense of complexity.

In this event "Sensemaking in a complex world" our 2 guest speakers will be discussing the intersection of systems thinking, complexity, and futures. This 1-hour event will take place on the 3th of July, 1pm GMT.

Speakers
Marcus Jenal:
Marcus is interested in co-creating learning and sense-making processes to become more effective in complex spaces. As a partner at Mesopartner, Marcus works with individuals, teams and organizations who face complex and uncertain situations supporting them to make sense of the world around them to enable them to act in a more meaningful way. He specialises in economic development from a complexity perspective but recognises that economic change is fundamentally embedded in social change at large.

Sonja Blignaut:
Sonja is a partner for leaders, change-makers (individuals and teams) who need to lead in uncertainty; enable strategic agility and create future-fit organisations. She co-creates and delivers fit-for-context interventions to enable responsive and adaptive organisations. She works primarily with Complex Systems theory, narrative and concepts from the Agile world and focuses on shifting ways of thinking and working. Sonja looks after the global Cognitive Edge network and has been a South African partner in the network for over a decade.
