Former top U.S. infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing Wednesday, declining to answer questions from lawmakers.

The hearing, led by Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul, focused on NIH research funding and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the proceedings, Paul ordered Capitol Police to remove Fauci's attorney, David Schertler, after the attorney attempted to address the committee without being recognized by the chair.

Paul argued that a presidential pardon issued by former President Joe Biden would not exempt Fauci from testifying. In a statement after the hearing, Schertler criticized Paul's actions, calling the investigation politically motivated and rejecting the allegations against Fauci.
