This is primarily a lecture in which I examine the question of how to build a community of people wanting to develop interactive storytelling. I begin by explaining why the gaming community has too many unconscious expectations pernicious to interactive storytelling. Then I show that the interactive fiction community presents lesser but similar dangers. Finally, I explain why the academic community would not provide a promising platform for our hypothetical community. Lastly, I discuss how best to build such a community. After commentary from viewers, I conclude by promising to build a rough proposal for how to proceed, which we shall discuss in the August seminar.
