This session examined the strategic importance of semiconductors and Japan’s efforts to regain leadership in advanced chip manufacturing through a state-backed industrial approach. Rapidus is a case study in a national effort, strongly backed with investment from the Japanese government, the company was set up in 2022 to drive advances in chip design and manufacturing.

The session explored questions of sovereign capability, trusted supply chains and how semiconductors integrate with other strategic sectors in Japan such as defence and advanced technology.

The session featured Dr Atsuyoshi Koike, Chief Executive Officer of Rapidus and  was moderated by Michaela Browning from the Brunswick Group. Translation was provided by Meg Shimoji.
