"Jah" sent me his DC as the controllers don't respond when plugged in. I thought I'd just do this for free, since the PO Box was expiring, and only "John" from episode 106 took up the offer so far.
I have an idea why the VMU is killing the controller. There might be a corrupt file on it. The broken VMU here has it's files readable when batteries are inserted and it's not plugged into the controller. The system may be looping, trying to read or process that corrupt file... not letting the system "continue" any other process until that particular process is done.

Found this Hori PSX Fighting Stick at Savers. I collect sticks. It was a no brainer. Didnt think Id like it this much.
Did some further research on the stick. Looks like the original paint on these were super fragile as Ive seen pics of this stick where the paint is all tore up, and had some QC issues.
