"Pareidoliac" is the second single from Big Heart Machine's new album- due out May 15- 'Live at The Jazz Gallery.' Pareidolia (/pærɪˈdoʊliə/ parr-i-DOH-lee-ə) is the tendency for incorrect perception of a stimulus as an object, pattern or meaning known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds, seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns, or hearing hidden messages in music.
Krock composed "Pareidoliac" with trumpeter Kenny Warren in mind. After listening to Warren's album 'YLA'- which consists of a variety of extended performance techniques mingling with ambient noises- he was inspired to orchestrate textures around these bizarre musical effects. Later in the piece, Krock utilizes a special system of cues to goad the ensemble- and flautist Anna Webber's microtonal free improvisation- into uncharted territory.
