In 1983 Activision released Seaquest for the Atari 2600, designed by Steve Cartwright — the same guy who gave us Barnstorming, Megamania, and Frostbite. It became one of the most addictive games in the entire 2600 library. And somehow, forty-plus years later, it still holds up.

I know because I still play it. I've been playing it since I was a kid.

The cartridge in this video is my actual childhood copy. It has lived through decades of use, survived whatever chaos a kid puts a game through, and it still works perfectly. It sits right next to my copy of Pitfall 2 — signed by David Crane himself — which tells you everything you need to know about how I feel about Activision's golden era.

Seaquest drops you underwater in command of a submarine. Your mission is to rescue divers six at a time while avoiding enemy subs, dodging sharks, and watching your oxygen supply like your life depends on it — because it does. The tension is real. The scoring system rewards risk. And the game gets faster every time you surface successfully.

Back in the day Activision had a promotion called the Sub Club — score 50,000 points, photograph your TV, mail it in, and they'd send you an embroidered patch. I scored over 80,000 points a few years ago and posted the video. Activision did not send me a patch. I'm not bitter. I'm just saying.

This is a Flashback Friday episode of Game Closet — where we go back to the games that shaped us and figure out why they still work decades later.

Spoiler: this one absolutely does.
