Two fascinating marine mammals are seals and sea lions, which are often confused.
They both belong to a group of animals called pinnipeds, combining the word pinna, meaning 'fin', and ped, meaning 'foot', which perfectly describes their fin-like flippers that help them glide through the water. Walruses are also pinnipeds.
But what’s the difference between seals and sea lions?
Sea lions have visible ear flaps and can use their large, strong front flippers to walk on land. Seals, on the other hand, have no visible ear flaps and move by wriggling on their bellies. Sea lions are also more social and noisy, while seals are quieter, generally pretty lazy on land and more solitary.
As mammals, both seals and sea lions are warm-blooded, have bodies covered in fur and give birth to young which are raised on milk produced by the mother.
