When Joe and I were on the Grecian island of Crete we saw a booth about the local sea turtles. I got to talking with some of the volunteers and wanted to get involved so the next day I woke up at 4:30 am to meet with the volunteers and walk the beach to get the nests for signs of any hatchings which take place at night. I got SO LUCKY because I actually got to see brand new baby sea turtle making its way to the ocean! It's a good thing I did too because I walked over 8 kms on that beach that morning and was EXHAUSTED afterwards.
THEN that night Joe joined me to observed a nest excavation. They would wait 10 days after the first set of turtles hatched to then dig it up and see if they could find any live ones who couldn't make it to the surface. They would then count the number of dead turtles and open up the eggs to see how many eggs hatched. Out of the unhatched eggs, they check if they were fertilised, if so, at which stage the fetus died, and if it died of a bacterial infection or not.
