We are in sea turtle hatchling season! Unfortunately, our sea turtle rehab team has recently received an increased number of hatchlings that have been found disoriented due to artificial lighting around the beach.
Our nesting patrols often find these lost baby sea turtles in parking lots, streets, swimming pools, and other hazardous areas away from the ocean. Hatchlings naturally follow the reflection of moonlight to find the water, but other bright white lights cause the hatchlings to go the wrong way.
Beach residents and property owners can help by switching to sea turtle-friendly lighting with red or amber lights and installing fixtures that block and point light down. Everyone can help us save sea turtles by reminding others to reduce the use of lights near the beach during nesting season!
