Alexander Arguelles | Scripting an Unscripted Language @ProfASAr | Uploaded December 2021 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
How does one go about learning a language for which there are no resources? What kind of training, dedication, and perseverance does it take not only to be the first outsider to learn a tribal language, but to document it - to create resources such as dictionaries and grammars, and to translate texts into it? Join me in conversation with Greg Kalmbacher who, after training in anthropological field linguistics at the Summer Institute of Linguistics, has been working on the Mpur language of New Guinea for going on 40 years, living for half that time in a highland jungle village, so that he can translate the New Testament into it as a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators.
If you might like to participate in my reading and discussion circles for French, German, Spanish, or Latin literature, or in seminars for Great Books of both Western and Eastern civilizations beginning in May of 2022, please fill out the application at alexanderarguelles.com/academy
