The word arribada comes from Spanish, meaning “arrival,” and refers to the mass, synchronized nesting of sea turtles — a unique behaviour seen in both olive ridley and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles.

Fun fact: Nearly 95% of Kemp’s ridley nesting — including those found in Canada — occurs on a single beach: Rancho Nuevo, in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico.
