The piece is based on the 16th century French popular song, _A l'ombre d'un Buissonet,_ first printed in "La Couronne et Fleur" in 1536. It was written for a large string ensemble of 12.12.8.8.4 players. It may be performed by a smaller group but was not intended for a chamber ensemble. The minimum number of players would be 8.6.4.4.2.
