_The Way to Castle Yonder_ is a concise digest of orchestral interludes for my second operatic collaboration with Maurice Sendak, _Higglety Pigglety Pop!,_ which is a theatrical requiem for his dog, Jennie, in the frame of a quest opera. Castle Yonder is the animals theatrical heaven of Sendaks imagination. The three continuous sections are:
0:00 I. The Journey to the Big White House, on a horse-drawn milk wagon driven by a cat-milkman. The music is based on Jennies aria which opens the opera. The wagon drives off and the show curtain closes. After a while, the pig is seen peeking out mysteriously from an arbour. He makes himself scarce when the milk wagon appears, crossing the stage in front of the show curtain.
3:08 II. Kleine Trauermusik: A Little orchestral meditation while Jennie dreams of lions - a chorale with another variant of Jennies aria.
4:11 III. The Ride to Castle Yonder: Chimes begin to sound in the distance. The characters climb on the Lions back. Mother Goose disappears as the bells get louder. The Lion springs forward, and the show curtain closes. This final section grows from these images in reverse order, and the arrival at Castle Yonder briefly harks back to the _Trauermusik_ chorale. - Oliver Knussen")

Childhood was tedium and bore, so whenever a pasar malam rolled into our estate, unfurling its train of colors, smells, and sounds, I would be whipped into delirious, arm-pulling, muah-chee frenzy: it is these memories that inspired my composition.
While listening to this overture, I invite you to conjure a cinematic sequence: on a hot tropical night, beneath a blood moon, a bazaar shimmers into existence. A young boy darts through the crowd, consuming the market in all its glory, before having his breath taken away by the sight of a beautiful girl (represented by the melody of P. Ramlee’s Getaran Jiwa). However, their new friendship is threatened by an ominous turn that might tear them asunder. A familiar tune – at least to all conscripted Singaporeans – arises. Will darkness take root, or will their friendship triumph?

Holst composed his _Wind Quintet_ in 1903. A note in his list of compositions states that Holst sent the score in 1914 to the flautist Albert Fransella (who took part in the performance of the _Terzetto_ in 1926). The work remained unperformed however, and all trace of it was lost until Holsts draft score turned up in a private collection in 1952. Then in 1978 the manuscript fair copy was discovered amongst the papers of Lucy Broadwood (1858-1929) which had been deposited in the Surrey Record Office. A copy of this score was kindly made available by the Broadwood Trust, and the work was performed for the first time on September 15th, 1982 by the Nash Ensemble in the Wigmore Hall, London.
In editing the music for performance Imogen Holst and I have made several substantial cuts in the first two movements. Had Holst had the opportunity to hear the work, we are confident that he would have done the same, eliminating unnecessary padding in order to match the conciseness of the _Minuet_ and _Air and Variations._ These two movements, with the exception of additional phrasing and dynamics, are published exactly as Holst left them. - Colin Matthews, editor")
