Rye Whiskey, Dry Vermouth, Lemon Juice, Grenadine (or Raspberry Syrup) make up this cocktail. Prohibition has been explored from Boardwalk Empire to Ken Burns. Luckily the Noble Experiment, that exposed our nation of drunkards, scofflaws and hypocrites, ended on December 5th, 1933 (aka Repeal Day).

During the tumultuous 13 year span of Prohibition, the teetotalers tried to start a fad by creating a word to sum up all of the vileness that was an American drinker during Prohibition. That word was, scofflaw. And like all inorganic corporate boardroom, crowd-source, study-grouped tag lines, phrases and hashtags, this one did not last. The only thing that remains is the mocking name of this cocktail.

The drink, the Scofflaw, was created in Paris by a bunch of ex-pats running a bar called Harry's New York Bar. The drink was proudly dubbed, "Scofflaw," as a middle finger to the teetotalers back home. The word never really caught on, but the drink did.

It's a sour-forward drink. It's in the neighborhood of a Whiskey Sour (youtu.be/jWeCefJj-T0), but the Dry Vermouth and Grenadine—or, in this case, Raspberry Syrup (youtu.be/fdtctmdqgA4)—take it into another place entirely. As always, use freshly squeezed lemon juice. If you can, make your own Grenadine or your own Raspberry Syrup. If you can't make sure to get a really high quality store bought version. Some recipes you'll see for this drink call for Canadian Blended Rye, but believe me you want to use a proper rye like Rittenhouse, it will make a big difference. Enjoy and scoff on you crazy diamond!

1 oz Dry Vermouth
0.75 oz Grenadine (or Raspberry Syrup)
