In this experiment Dr Rob Thompson from the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology shows just how long it takes a cup of water to soak into parched ground.
The video, filmed on the Whiteknights campus in the Harris Garden, illustrates why heavy rainfall after a drought can be really dangerous and might lead to flash flooding.
