The scientific method is simple: You observe something or ask a question which then forms the basis of your hypothesis. You then test your hypothesis in a systematic way and analyse the result so you can draw some conclusions. You communicate your conclusions and start your next run around the cycle.
Flat earthers don't seem to get a lot of the nuance that is possible due to the vague definition of the scientific method. In addition, they neglect that each individual step can be treated as a separate investigation in itself.
