We cannot prove that the earth is an oblate spheroid, this is because we can not 'prove' anything in science; we can only disprove things. When we say that we have shown something to be true, what we actually mean is that we have shown that the probability that the null result is correct is horribly small.

We also explore curve fitting a bit as I seem to talk about it a lot.
