Do leaderboards work?

Leaderboards are one of the most common game elements applied in gamification projects. However, only a few studies have tried to isolate their effects on the players. During the launch of our citizen science game, Quantum Moves, we got a unique opportunity to test the different effects the leaderboard had on our game. We tested with around 5000 people how far they proceeded in our game, how well they played, and whether they replayed the game after having played the same game in one of the three different conditions: without any leaderboard, a top-5 leaderboard, and a relative leaderboard.
