SCHWARZE ADLER (Black Eagles) is a feature documentary focusing on the experience of ex-national team players of colour for Germany’s Women’s and Men’s national football teams. These trailblazing men and women share their personal stories and experiences of how they arrived to the top of the sport. What obstacles did they need to overcome? Which prejudices and racial hostilities were they faced with? How was it for the first generation of players—and how is it for today’s footballing heroes?
Their stories not only capture what it’s like to be racially abused by thousands in football stadiums and by millions in front of their TVs. They also cast light on how spectators, the media and Germany itself deal with racism and how German society has slowly shifted the way it approaches race over the course of the past few decades.
SCHWARZE ADLER is more than a documentary about Germany’s favourite sporting pastime and its most-influential protagonists. At a time, where the entire world has reached a tipping point, SCHWARZE ADLER is the story of a country that has not yet arrived where it thought it had years ago.
