In 1819, Anton Diabelli, Austrian publisher and composer, asked every important composer of his time to write a variation on a waltz he had written expressly for this purpose.
Fifty-one composers responded with pieces, including Beethoven, Schubert, Czerny, Hummel and Franz Liszt.
