Viennese Tales: Beethoven, Schubert and the Art of Musical Storytelling
Schubert spent most of his life in Vienna. He was a great admirer of Beethoven (and was a torch bearer at his funeral), and in his short life created some of the most beautiful melodic works of the late classical and early romantic period. He wrote the Arpeggione Sonata in a minor in 1824. The Arpeggione is a six-stringed instrument that is tuned like a guitar (E, B, G, D, A, E) but is bowed and held like a cello or bass viola da gamba. The instrument was invented in 1823 by Johann Stauffer (a Viennese guitar maker) and it was at the height of its popularity a year later than Schubert wrote his sonata for it. By the time the sonata was published in 1871, however, the instrument has faded into obscurity. While Schubert, unlike most of his contemporaries, never composed a concerto, the difficulty of the Arpeggione for a 4 stringed instrument such as a cello or viola, on which it is now played, makes it equivalent to one. The soulful and lyrically haunting opening melody of the first movement, Allegro Moderato, exemplifies Schubert’s melodic genius, as does the soaring melody of the second movement, Adagio. The juxtaposition of these melodies with the playful second theme of the first movement as well as the alternately playful and impassioned melodies and harmonies of the third movement, Allegretto, create an exquisite tapestry that is quintessential Schubert.
