Should I die among your sage
My essence shall burst free and drain
Through roots of those same droughted plants
Who clasp your past; they understand
That I once knew you, light and shade,
And fell in peace like promised rain

But should I live, let me remain
O draw me near; in pools I’ll stand
And from your heat, draw shining strength
While nestled in your sandstone hands
Where we may watch your seasons rage
And, graceless, dance along your strands

For I, too, am marred and strange
By sun and wind and stars deplored
A vagrant flood, a moth to flame,
Adoring your unearthly forms

So wrap me in your fierce embrace
And by our joining faults abide
Forgive me what mistakes I’ve made
And sing to me through vanished tides
For quick or still, I shall hold true
And ‘til, in time, my torrent breaks,
Will judge your madness beautiful
And linger by your slender sage
