Mukhamet Shayakhmetov's memoir The Silent Steppe describes his childhood and youth in the 1920s and 30s at time when Kazakhstan was devastated by the Soviet government's attempt to apply collectivisation to a nomadic pastoralist society.
The 2006 translation by Jan Butler is very readable.
