Portfolio Brief: The scale of our challenges requires solutions that scale. Most of the big challenges outlined in the National Defense Strategy are all problems of human systems at scale that require solutions that understand humans at (and across) scale. Machines inherently scale, but the track record for affecting positive change is a mixed bag. To create vibrant democratic societies and advance human rights, we need to better understand, shape, and manage human-machine hybrid intelligences. We think this requires fundamentally different approaches that combine ideas from multiple scientific disciplines (e.g., non-linear systems, network science, cognitive science, neuroscience, behavioral economics, human psychology and machine intelligence).
