Dragon Scale Binding Jim Escalante 2021-05-28 | Cynthia Tidler, a University of Wisconsin-Madison, Master of Fine Arts graduate from 2015, was a student in my book arts class. Cindy had written a creation story for her folklore class and wanted to create a unique book. As she searched for an appropriate book structure, she learned about the Dragon Scale binding. This style of binding was popular in China around 650 A.D. While she was not able to find many examples to use for reference, the book structure was very appealing to her. The structure allows the viewer to turn individual pages and then roll it into a scroll. Her book combined her panoramic drawing with the text that she wrote. Using dry mount film in book binding, part II. Jim Escalante 2021-03-17 | In a previous video, titled "Dry mount film in book binding" I gave a demonstration how Fusion 4000 dry mounting film can be used to attach two long pieces of paper to make an accordion fold book.In this second video, I show how I attached printed sheets of paper into the accordion book. Fusion 4000 offers an acid free method of attaching paper to cover stock or thicker board. One advantage is that it can be removed by applying heat. Book binders frequently use wet adhesives, glue sticks and archival transfer tape, to bond paper into books. Dry mount tissue or film, is another method. It is easy to use and it is long lasting.In this demonstration, handmade sheets made from abaca fiber are attached to Gmund Bier paper cover stock. This book of poems is titled "Burning My Name" and was written by Todd Moore. The edition is approximately 40 copies. The text and book cover image were printed on a Vandercook SP 15 letterpress printing press. The title page image is a digital collage and was printed on Japanese paper using an ink jet printer. Dry Mount Film in Book Binding Jim Escalante 2021-01-27 | Dry mounting tissue, as it is often called, has many applications. Book binders have used it for many years to assemble accordion fold books. I know of other binders that have used it to assemble "Drum Leaf" bound books. I have not found many tutorials on how dry mount film or tissue is used in book binding. I hope to make more videos. I purchased the items that I used in this video at Talas, an on line vendor for conservation and book binding supplies. Fusion 4000 is a dry mounting film and release paper can be purchased at other locations. A good art supplier in your town may have these items. Tacking irons are sold in many stores.
