You know “au revoir”. You've practically known it since day one of learning French. So why does saying goodbye in French still feel like a small test you're never sure you’ve passed?

French goodbyes are a little more involved than one simple “au revoir” at the door, and the real spoken versions of goodbye are nothing like what you learned in a classroom. In fact, there's a whole ritual to it!

When to say bisous, how to soften a goodbye, which phrases in the Ă  bientĂŽt family are only for same-day goodbyes (and which aren't), and why adieu is almost never the right choice. I'll walk you through all of it, with the dos, the don'ts, and the phrases you'll actually hear at the end of a French conversation.
