Saving The Prairie Dogs - just one of the many animal causes I totally support & wanted to share.
Prairie dogs are more than adorable, they are necessary for a healthy prairie ecosystem. Still, every day prairie dogs are poisoned, shot, bulldozed, or victims of exotic diseases.
The reason for this is due to the fact that prairie dogs are considered a pest by the ranchers & farmers. They live in burrows under ground & eat the roots of crops. For years people would actually have a "shooting party" where a group would get together and try to kill as many as they could. They would gather them up in big burlap bags. It has become an event & some sick people even consider it fun!
* And actually this particular rescue showcased in the vid was not due to ranchers. This was due to the fact that these prairie dogs made the very bad decision to set up house near a rifle range. So to get them out of harm's way - they are being relocated.
The Humane Society of the United States' Prairie Dog Coalition and their partners are working to turn things around for this keystone species. Through non-lethal management trainings and wild-to-wild relocations, they are saving the lives of individual animals and restoring the prairie dog ecosystem on protected public lands.
This month, the Thunder Basin National Grassland relocation team provided refuge to 349 prairie dogs! Yes!
