Founded in 1877 alongside the Colorado Central Railroad, the City of Loveland has grown from a small agricultural town known for sugar beets and sour cherries into a dynamic City with diverse economic roots.

The Loveland Great Western Sugar Beet factory was built in 1901 and the passenger depot was built in 1902. The production and processing of sugar beets was one of the most economically important industries in northern Colorado during the early decades of the 20th century. The depots played an integral role in the industry’s success, which grew Loveland’s population by 300% in the first 10 years of operation.

In 2012, a pivotal moment in Loveland's history unfolded when the train depot located in southeastern Loveland along the Great Western Railway was threatened with demolition. Faced with the loss of this historic gem, the Loveland Historic Preservation Commission joined the Loveland Historical Society's Depots Committee to save the depots, including fundraising and planning for an environmental assessment and cleanup in anticipation of moving the building 100 feet south from its original location.

The Commission, an advisory body to the Loveland City Council, works to protect and enhance historic properties. They play a key role in advising on the designation of landmarks and districts, ensuring that such important parts of our history are not only remembered but also integrated into our community's future. These efforts showcase how historic preservation in Loveland is more than just conserving buildings; it's about preserving our collective story and identity.
