Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat major, KV 281 opens with one of the strangest Allegros he ever wrote — almost Baroque, full of ornamentation, rhetorical accents, and a mysterious trill that doesn’t “open” the piece in any traditional sense.
In this episode of Beyond the Notes, I walk you through how I bring this Allegro to life on the clavichord. We talk about:
• what Czerny and Moscheles really meant with their metronome marks
• how 2/4 in Mozart often hides a 4-8 pulse
• why doubling the tempo destroys the rhetoric
• how small accents, timing, lengthening and articulation unlock the expression
• why this movement is basically one big ornamentation lesson
• and how to avoid making it sound flat, rushed, or meaningless
