A site tour around York Archaeology's excavation at Savile Street in Sheffield. The archaeological works were undertaken in in conjunction with BWB Consulting in advance of development at the site, as part of the planning process. Advice and monitoring was provided by South Yorkshire Archaeology Service on behalf of Sheffield City Council. Starting with the early phases of the site with evidence of the water powered grinding mill, which was later encroached on by the expansion of the neighbouring steelworks. Evidence for this large scale industrial development can be seen across the site and tells the story of the growth of industry in this area of Sheffield during the 19th and into the 20th century. We also see evidence for the day to day lives of the people living and working in this urban landscape during this time.
