The UK is the main European exporter of deadly agrochemicals – such as paraquat - that have devastating effects on humans, animals and the environment across the Global South.
According to recent reports from Unearthed and Public eye, in 2020 the UK shipped overseas 12,240 tonnes of pesticides considered too dangerous for use at home.
Pesticides like paraquat – produced in Huddersfield’s Syngenta factory - and much newer chemicals, like propiconazole, are exported to countries with looser regulations, where communities and farmers lack the resources to protect themselves against exposure to potentially fatal chemical reactions.
Kenya has been importing paraquat – under Syngenta’s commercial name, Gramoxone – and other highly hazardous pesticides for years.

While the UK produces and exports dangerous, banned agrotoxics to the Global South, our partners in Kenya are creating alternative, affordable, and safe solutions for their members, while opposing the import of toxic pesticides.
