In anything we don't agree on nationally, it's possible in principle to always leave it to the states. The problem is that in that case, you can't have federal funds, and that creates a problem. I.e. you can't have the states individual have, or not, the federal military. You can't have state by state decide the immigration law.
But most things can be devolved to the states, and we need to do this to get past these disagreements.
Conservatives and Liberals will be here 100 years ago. I hope the Conservatives then are more liberal than the liberals now... but whatever, they'll both be here, it's part of human social discourse that large categories or schools of thought rise up. Where we cannot get along, we need to split up, using the federated nature of the US.
