At CES 2019, I got to meet the guys behind the SatPaq device. We were indoors, so we couldn't actually use it. Over the years I've seen many ways to use Satellite communications, but all of the ones I saw involved a monthly charge. Since you may only want to make a satellite call in an emergency, the SatPaq phone seems like a good idea to me. You buy it for $249.00 & then pay only when you want to use it, with no monthly fee. It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth to send and receive messages anywhere in the US where there is no cell service. The spokesperson said a text message would be about 40 cents.
