Written by Joan Javits and Philip Springer, Eartha Kitt recorded the song with Henri René and his orchestra. After its release in October 1953, it became the best-selling Christmas song of that year!
The song's suggestive lyrics and sexual undertone were considered quite controversial (the song was even banned for some time in the American South), and "Santa Baby" has been named both one of the best and one of the worst Christmas songs ever written...
Still, the song has become a famous holiday hit, and has been recorded by many artists, including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, Ariana Grande, Gwen Stefani, Taylor Swift, and many others.
Many consider Eartha Kitt's original recording to be the greatest version of the song - it certainly makes for a fantastic piano cover!
