I have been tasked with the challenge to make videos to go along with songs written by my friend Sandy Soffe from Pennsylvania that go along with the Twelve Steps endorsed by Celebrate Recovery. The Celebrate Recovery Twelve Steps are pretty much the same as the Twelve Steps used by Alcoholics Anonymous. While AA uses the vague phrase "higher power", Celebrate Recovery's version makes it very clear that that "higher power" is Jesus Christ.
So, Step Five is about confessing our sins to someone we trust. Another human being, that is. Of course, in Step 7, the verse that goes along with that step is 1 John 1:9, which talks about confessing our sins to God Himself. But here in Step 5 we confess our sins to each other, as James 5:16 says:
"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."
Since the Twelve Steps were designed to be done in order, it's significant that we confess our friends to a soulmate first, before we confess them to God. And it goes without saying, that where we start is to admit our sins to ourselves first, which is done in the earlier steps before Step Five.
