I’d had a falling out with a dear friend, and around the same time discovered, as I put together a setlist for a gig, that most of my songs were ballads, and/or sad, and/or in minor keys: I needed something uptempo. Out of those two impetuses this tune began to emerge. I especially liked it when this line emerged: You’ve got a tricky psyche/you’d say the same of me. It seemed to sum things up.
I also gave myself a challenge to not only name various dances in the song, but to include two different rhythms; and that became the move from 4/4 in the verse to 6/8 in the bridge. I so appreciate how percussionist Kit Bailey holds that tight as we move from one to the other.
