Craig Dabler - The DIY Castings Guy | Sand Casting Sand / Clay: Is It Still Good @craigdabler-thediycastings7511 | Uploaded June 2020 | Updated October 2024, 4 hours ago.
Often, I get messages asking how to determine whether or not casting sand or casting clay is still good so here is a simple way to tell. Take it out of its container, break it up, and squeeze it in your hand. If it stays together with the impression of your skin in the surface and then breaks apart cleanly and stays intact it is most likely in good working condition. If however it doesn't stay together then it either needs to be remixed with a tiny bit of oil (about 1 tbsp of mineral oil to 4 pounds) or just tossed out and replaced. Mixing well is important and usually done with a sand muller but can be done with the hands in small amounts. Too much oil will ruin it.
High quality Red Clay is available here: diycastings.com or on Etsy at diycastings2.com
