Through our Frozen Zoo® and seed banking efforts, we are preserving the legacy of life on Earth for future generations by establishing and maintaining genetic resources in support of worldwide efforts in research and conservation.
Today, we are on the brink of the sixth great extinction, with species disappearing at a staggering rate. More than 23,000 species of animals and plants are threatened with extinction, including 3,647 that are critically endangered and in danger of imminent extirpation.
Our Frozen Zoo®, the world's largest living cell and tissue bank, and our Seed Bank have begun to address the problem, but our efforts must be significantly accelerated if we are to keep up with current rate of species loss.
We propose to safeguard living DNA cell lines, gametes, and seeds from as many endangered plant and animal species as possible as the ultimate firewall against extinction.
