San Diego County Sheriff Kelly Martinez sat down with us and said something neither of our CCW instructors had heard before: if your concealed carry application is denied, you can reapply the next day. There is no waiting period in statute. None.

That matters because most denials we see are not dangerous people getting caught. They are law-abiding applicants who forgot a traffic stop from decades ago, or who never thought a mental health transport counted as "law enforcement contact." Nothing in their history made them a prohibited person. They just answered a badly written question.

In this interview:

- Where the Sheriff stands on CCW, in her own words, and why she will not give you her personal opinion on gun ownership
- Whether more permit holders has meant more problem calls for her deputies
- The arc from roughly 1,100 permits issued to well over 30,000
- Keeping a pathway open when the state tried to squeeze CCW instructors out of existence
- Why she opposed SB2 and refused a proposed large increase in fees
- Two more licensing positions added this budget year, and where the wait times stand now
- Why she wants renewals pushed to four years, "just like a driver's license"
- Her advice to applicants: read it, fill it out completely, and do not assume they already know. "We don't cross-pollinate data"
- The moment she tells us a denied applicant can reapply immediately
- Her case that a false answer on the form predicts a false answer in a post-shooting investigation, and why we push back on it

If you gave up on your permit after a denial, watch this one and then go reapply.
