I believe that there is a total of 5 Unique NPCs, which are essentially the special CAWs that you come across and get to obtain as allies in the game's Chronicle Mode.

UPDATE: I believe that Saio Douzan and Saburo Hojo / Kagetora Uesugi are also Unique NPCs, but since I have never received them as allies..... Idk... D:

In order to get them as allies in Chronicle Mode, I believe that you just have to keep playing missions all over the world map. That's what I did. Also, try increasing the difficulty every now and then to increase the chances of them showing up faster. Playing on Hard mode is ideal in this case.

They have their own biographies and everything. Here's a little glimpse of each of them in action.
