The sound hardware of the original GameBoy or the GBC is not really capable of playing sampled audio data by default. While it's somewhat possible by using the PCM channel the result is often not very good. A better quality can be achieved by performing amplitude modulation on the 2 pulse wave channels. The sampling rate is about 16384 Hz and the output has an amplitude range from 0 to 22.

The music in this video is from the level "Carrotus" from Jazz Jackrabbit 2.

Note: This version of the player is old and the playback code has since been revised to support 43 amplitude levels without requiring an external speaker.
