Entered into our 2018 ZEISS Photography Competition.

The video shows oscillations of a small air bubble trapped underwater when a drop impacts the surface. These oscillations, captured in this video for the first time, drive the characteristic “plink” sound produced by a dripping tap or when raindrops fall onto a lake.

Work conducted alongside Dr Anurag Agarwal and Professor Peter Jordan (PPRIME Institute, University of Poitiers), with the help of acoustics lab technician Mr John Hazlewood.
